The Engagement Ring Trend That’s Ahead of the Curve

The sharp, angled silhouettes of deco-inspired design may be perennial bridal favorites, but in 2024 engagement rings distinguished by rounded, organic shapes are on the rise.

Credit the pendulum swing that governs trends in the fine jewelry category. After years of geometric styles taking center stage, designers are embracing more voluptuous settings featuring gentle curves set with curvy stones such as rounds, pears, ovals, and marquise-cut.

Refinery29 noted the fashion for curved rings in its roundup of 2024 engagement ring trends. One reason the look is gaining popularity has to do with the way modern brides are wearing their wedding jewels: paired with bands and decorative jackets boasting easy-to-stack rounded forms.

Another reason for the renewed interest in curvy forms? Don’t discount the seductiveness of designs that recall Mother Nature, especially in these AI-fueled times, nor the growing appeal of unconventional-looking rings that stray from tradition with an artfully placed curve or two.

Below, we feature a bevy of slinky rings set with modestly sized diamonds as well as major statement stones—proof that no matter the budget, curvaceous styles are guaranteed crowd-pleasers.

Engagement Ring Trends 2024: Here’s what you can expect

In the ever-evolving world of jewellery trends, 2024 is set to bring forth a tapestry of captivating engagement ring aesthetics, each reflecting the diverse tastes and desires of couples embarking on the journey of a lifetime. Personalisation is set to become paramount, with couples embracing birthstones, secret engravings, and bespoke elements.

As discerning customers tread the path of trends, fine jewellers emphasise the enduring allure of diamonds, advocating for durability over fleeting fashions. The lab-grown diamond market is expected to continue to grow, with fine jewellers such as Steven Stone encouraging the rise of “made not minded” diamonds. “Heritage improved by innovation, there is not a better combination in our opinion,” explains Managing Director Zack Stone.

That being said, design preferences are witnessing a shift towards modernity and personal expression. Playful styles like multi-stone rings find favour, allowing couples to craft unique, bespoke pieces that echo their individuality. “Overall I think people are more open minded about what rings they might want, and also may not see the value in just going for a diamond when there are so many alternative beautiful options out there,” explains Alona Shlemey the founder of contemporary jewellery brand ByAlona.

Diamond Prices Are Set to Spike. Here’s Why.

  • Buying a diamond is about getting more expensive, industry experts told Business Insider.
  • That’s due to a number of pandemic distortions that are finally working their way out of the industry.
  • Prices could rise as much as 10% over the next year, some analysts say.

Buying a diamond is about to become more expensive.

Blame a myriad of factors that are boosting the market, including tighter supply, hotter demand, and a wave of couples who are expected to get cuffed in the coming years, industry experts say.

Jewelers are anxiously looking forward a hotter engagement season after a tepid year of sales, with prices across all diamond categories plunging around 30% in 2023. For lower-quality and smaller diamonds, prices plunged to their lowest levels in about 10 years, according to Paul Zimnisky, a leading diamond analyst.

But diamond prices have begun to tick higher in recent months. The International Diamond Exchange’s Diamond Index climbed past a level of 110 in January, snapping a steep decline that lasted nearly all of the past two years.

6 engagement ring trends that modern brides are loving right now

The round brilliant-cut diamond will forever be a classic and likely the most widely purchased diamond shape. In Singapore, at least, it seems to still be the most in-demand choice – local jewelery brand Holly Gray’s co-founder, Hanya Seah, said that Singaporeans largely stay with safe designs when it comes to engagement rings. In fact, 90 per cent of the custom orders she gets are for a solitaire. Around the world, however, there has been a growing appreciation for fancy cuts, which include any other diamond shape besides the round.

While a heart-shaped diamond might not be for everyone, there are other fancy cuts that can be as timeless as the solitaire. Take, for example, the emerald, cushion, oval or Asscher cut, which all make for simple and sophisticated ring designs and are gaining popularity with those who desire a ring style that is out of the ordinary and yet still classic.

There are also those who prefer to get a completely unique and bold design they have in their minds customized. All one needs is to find a jeweler who can realize it for them. Seah remembered a particularly memorable double-arrow diamond engagement ring she produced for a client.

8 Styles You’ll Love Now & Forever

Fashion trends these days tend to burn fast and bright, fading almost as fast as they come. After all, we’re living in an era of fleeting TikTok #cores that arrived one day and were swiftly replaced with something like the “Mob Wife” or “Eclectic Grandpa” aesthetics the next. This, however, is not the case with the engagement ring trends of 2024, all of which feel like subtle updates on designs with staying power. Indeed, the latest options out there have the potential to feel relevant for many years to come — so long as your pick and personal taste are aligned.

One smart way to narrow the selection? “Save photos of every ring you like and create a folder of all of them together,” says designer Ashley Zhang, whose vintage-inspired and customized pieces are a hit with fashion-obsessed brides-to-be. “Once you see all these styles side by side it can be helpful to see if there is a common element, or if you don’t like some of them as much as you think you do.”

But if a well-curated mood board helps to focus your engagement ring shopping, trying bands IRL is more likely to inspire in a final decision.

Would you buy a diamond made in a lab? Consumers are taking a shine to them

When Evelyn Schaffer first saw her engagement ring, she was speechless.

It was a 0.76-carat, oval-cut stunner — and he said no one had been able to tell that the diamonds were created in a lab.

“I’ve never seen anything like it and it’s gorgeous,” Schaffer said. “The lab-grown diamonds are actually more sparkly in my opinion.”

As consumer awareness grows, the popularity of gems that are manufactured, not mined, is surging.

By some estimates, lab-grown diamonds make up nearly 20 per cent of the total global diamond jewelry market.

Evelyn Schaffer and Ene Mwadi chose a lab-grown diamond engagement ring.

Schaffer, a 30-year-old music teacher, and her fiancé, Ene Mwadi, 26, said their motivation was partly financial. Recent innovations have made lab-grown diamonds much more affordable, with some one-carat rings available for less than $2,000 — nearly 70 per cent cheaper than their natural counterparts.

“I didn’t want us to start our marriage with a bunch of debt over a ring,” Schaffer said.

Multi-diamond engagement ring found downtown Kelowna

A multi-diamond engagement ring found in the 1600 block of Bertram Street has been turned over to the Kelowna RCMP who are attempting to find its rightful owner.

A Good Samaritan brought the ring to the detachment on Dec. 27. There was an attempt to find the owner through social media, but was unsuccessful.

“This ring obviously has great meaning to its owner and appears to be well-worn and valuable. The Kelowna RCMP would like to reunite this ring with its rightful home,” said Const. Mike Della-Paolera. “The ring is very distinct and has a word stamped on the inside.”

If you are the owner of this ring and can identify it, please visit the front counter of the Kelowna RCMP Detachment at 1190 Richter Street. Be prepared to provide evidence of ownership or positively identify it, said Const. Della-Paolera.

The Kelowna RCMP will hold this ring for 90 days.

This is the second expensive item to be turned over to the RCMP in the last week. On Dec. 22, a genuine Rolex watch was found outside a restaurant in the 1300 block of Water Street.

RCMP continues to hold onto this item for 90 days as well.
