CHICAGO (CBS) – A man trying to rob a jewelry store in the Loop Saturday morning was shot by an employee inside, and it was all captured on surveillance cameras inside and outside the store.
The incident happened just before 11 am on Jeweler’s Row, in the 0-100 block of North Wabash Avenue.
Surveillance video shows the would-be robber, who wore a red sweatshirt, walking around for about a minute before he took off running toward the entrance.
He began to bash in a glass case, and that’s when the employee reached behind the counter and began shooting at the man before he tried to get away.
Footage from outside the store shows him stumbling out, then running back in to grab what appears to be a small bag before taking off up the stairs to the CTA.
Police say shortly after that, a man was placed into custody and taken to the hospital for a gunshot wound, where he was reportedly stabilized.
The employee is a FOID card and concealed carry license holder.
“I think throwing all the responsibility on the business owners or the residences is really not the right way to go,” said Christine, who did not want to give her last name.
SHe has lived in a neighboring building for about 14 years and says he wants to see more police in the area as he is concerned with the recent spike in crime he has seen.
“The crime is just escalating, and it’s getting worse and worse,” she said. “We had kids killed a few weeks ago. Now this armed robbery, it’s a shame.”
Security inside tells CBS 2 that the employee who opened the fire is in custody as Chicago Police continue their investigation.
Charges against the robbery suspect are pending.
CTA trains were bypassing the Washington-Wabash stop following the shooting but have since returned to normal.
