It was in 1610 that the father of modern astronomy Galileo Galilei first spotted Saturn’s spectacular rings – although through his pioneering but primitive telescope he liked them more to ‘ears’.

Now, more than 400 years on, anyone with even a simple piece of kit can witness the cosmic spectacle with their own eyes.

Until 2025.

Saturn’s rings are going to disappear. Twice.

The original planetary hula hoop is made up of seven individual rings, which are thought to be comprised of bits of comets, asteroids and shattered moons that strayed too close to the gas giant and were torn to shreds by its powerful gravity.

There are also billions of chunks of ice, and the whole thing is coated in space dust.

No one is quite sure how old the rings are, although a study published in May suggested they are just babies in cosmic terms, potentially having formed just 400 million years ago – less than a tenth of the age of the planet.

But one thing we do know is that they’re

Saturn’s rings younger than previously thought — just a few hundred million years: IU News

Saturn.

New research reveals that Saturn’s rings are much younger than the planet itself. Photo courtesy of NASA/JPL/Space Science Institute.

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — Saturn’s rings are much younger than scientists once thought, according to new research from Indiana University Professor Emeritus of Astronomy Richard Durisen — and they are not here to stay.

For decades, there has been debate about the origin of Saturn’s icy rings. But according to two new studies from Durisen, published in Icarus, the rings are no more than a few hundred million years old — much younger than the planet itself, which was formed 4.5 billion years ago. In fact, Durisen said the rings may well have formed when dinosaurs were still walking on the Earth.

Durisen and co-author Paul Estrada, a research scientist at NASA’s Ames Research Center in California’s Silicon Valley, also concluded that the rings will last only another few hundred million years at most.

“Our inescapable conclusion is that Saturn’s rings must be relatively young by astronomical standards, only a few hundred million years old,” Durisen said. “If you look at Saturn’s satellite system, there are other hints that something dramatic happened there in the last few hundred million years.”

Samsung Galaxy Ring: What We Know About the New Oura Challenger

Samsung is no stranger to the world of wearables. But this year, it’s expanding to a new product category for the first time in years: smart rings. The smartphone giant teased its new Galaxy Ring at an event in January and showcased it at Mobile World Congress in February, signaling a major expansion of its efforts in health tracking.

This story is part of Samsung EventsCNET’s collection of news, tips and advice around Samsung’s most popular products.

But Samsung hasn’t revealed much about what to expect from the Galaxy Ring. The company showed the device in a vague video clip at the end of its Unpacked presentation and has allowed reporters — including myself and CNET’s Katie Collins — to see a prototype of the ring. However, the company hasn’t revealed key details like how much it will cost, when it will arrive and, most importantly, what exactly it will do.

Samsung’s comments suggest health tracking will be the ring’s main purpose, following the lead of the Oura, Evie and other tiny wellness devices designed to be worn around the finger. Apple is also rumored to be experimenting with the idea of a smart ring, according to Bloomberg, in

Jamil Sheriff’s Five Gold Rings – ‘Red Kite’ – London Jazz News

Jamil Sheriff’s Five Gold Rings – Red Kite
(Lamplight Social Records LSRDL28. Album review by Julian Maynard-Smith)

If Leeds Conservatoire wanted an aural prospectus showcasing their teaching talents, they couldn’t do much better than Red Kite, an album on which all members of the quintet are not only performers of long standing but also lecturers at the conservatoire. Also, the quintet’s leader, pianist Jamil Sheriff, is the conservatoire’s head of school of music and education, and until recently (2014–2023) was the jazz program leader. Joining him are Jim Corry (alto saxophone), Richard Iles (flugelhorn), Sam Quintana (double bass) and Caroline Boaden (drums).

All ten tracks are Sheriff originals and they’re all in the post-bop tradition, but with enough originality to balance familiarity with freshness. For example, the opener ‘Going to Church’ shares the fluidity and expansiveness of Miles Davis’s second great quartet (at 10:32, it’s the longest track on the album) and Corry’s alto saxophone put me in mind of Bobby Watson; ‘Speed Awareness’ morphs from a stop-time melody shared between alto sax and flugelhorn backed by complex drumming into a well-oiled, high-speed modal number reminiscent of Coltrane’s ‘Impressions’ (which, incidentally, is itself based on the changes of

Emily Ratajkowski has had a pair of “divorce rings” made.

It seems the model and influencer, 31, has repurposed the bands from the two-stone engagement ring she received from her ex-husband Sebastian Bear-McClard, 36, in 2018, which she revealed last year she had kept after their separation in September 2022.

She flashed her new bling in a revealing Instagram post in which she appeared to be lying topless on her bed, and captioned the image: “Divorce rings (copyright symbol.)”

Emily also tagged the jewelery company founded by Alison Chemla Chetrit in the post.

The ‘High Low with EmRata’ podcast host filed to divorce ‘Uncut Gems’ producer Sebastian in September 2022 after sources confirmed to Page Six he had allegedly cheated on her multiple ties.

Alison’s jewelery brand replied to her rings post with the message: “We made the original two stone engagement ring that set the trend… Here we go again @emrata Divorce Rings (trademark symbol.)”

Emily sported her sparkling “divorce rings” on the fourth and fifth fingers of her left hand – with the one on her ring finger featuring the unique design of a princess-cut stone

Zebras receive basketball championship rings | The Arkansas Democrat-Gazette

As a new basketball season dawns, Pine Bluff High School supporters were still celebrating the championship season that was Sunday night.

The Zebras received their championship rings during a banquet at the Pine Bluff Convention Center, eight months after they won the 5A state final over Lake Hamilton in Hot Springs.

Senior Courtney Crutchfield was among the players who received multiple awards. The All-Arkansas Preps Male Athlete of the Year was also the 5A tournament most valuable player, the 5A-South Conference Player of the Year for the second year in a row and named All-State.

Yet as the one-time University of Arkansas football recruit received each award at the podium, Crutchfield maintained a look of determination, knowing there’s more than just a repeat of last season to chase.

Crutchfield and teammate Austyn Dendy are just two Zebras also going for a state championship in football. Pine Bluff will host Shiloh Christian of Springdale on Friday in the 5A semifinals at Jordan Stadium.

“It’s all a business game,” Crutchfield said. “You’ve got to take care of business on the field. I haven’t made it to the basketball court yet, but they know what time it is when I get there, too.”

Saturn’s rings are glowing in the Webb Space Telescope’s latest cosmic shot

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) — Saturn has a fresh new look thanks to NASA’s Webb Space Telescope.

The gas giant is dark in the latest photo by Webb, released Friday, but its icy rings are glowing.

Webb snapped the picture in the infrared last weekend. At this wavelength, the planet appears dark because sunlight is absorbed by methane in the atmosphere. But the icy rings remain bright.

Three of Saturn’s many moons also got caught on camera.

Scientists are thrilled with this latest shot, which captures Saturn’s atmosphere in detail. They hope to uncover new ring structures as well as any new, faint moons that might be lurking there.

“We look forward to digging into the deep exposures to see what discoveries may await,” Matthew Tiscareno, a senior research scientist at the SETI Institute, said in a statement.

The stories that accompany the Broncos’ Super Bowl rings

The Leads

As Super Bowl LVIII approaches, ESPN looks back at the ring of each Super Bowl champion to share a number of priceless stories.

The Broncos, of course, had three rings featured — and Ring of Famers Mike Shanahan and Rod Smith and former tackle Ryan Harris offered insight into what their ring — or rings — meant to them.

“…When I look at that first one…I see what it takes,” Mike Shanahan said of his Super Bowl XXXII ring. “You can go through the years and go through the list of people who’ve played and coached in the National Football League, great players, great coaches, and they don’t have one. They don’t hand them out for one good effort. You look at it and see skill, luck, big-time plays in big-time moments, but you see the attention to detail and that you have to be a team with that attention to detail, everybody top to bottom, or you ‘re not going to get one.”

Shanahan’s pair of Super Bowl rings are kept in a display case at his Denver restaurant, and he told ESPN he “never” wears the pieces of jewelry.

Smith, meanwhile, said he brings his two

Saturn’s rings may be no more than 400 million years old

Saturn’s rings might have formed while trilobites scuttled about on Earth. Space dust has been accumulating on the icy halos for no more than 400 million years, researchers report in the May 12 Science Advances.

The 4.5-billion-year-old planet appears to have acquired its iconic ornamentation relatively recently, says physicist Sascha Kempf of the University of Colorado Boulder. “We’re quite lucky to see a ring in the first place.”

The rings of Saturn are made of countless icy particles, which become covered with dust as tiny meteoroids strike them. These dustings darken the rings’ complexion, like mud sullies snow on roads in winter.

BOSTON — The Sphere in Las Vegas is a modern marvel of entertainment. And with the Super Bowl being played in town this week, the venue is being utilized to appeal to all of the football visitors.

And although the Patriots are a long way away from playing in the Super Bowl, their historic dynasty spent some time lighting up the exterior of the Sphere this week.

The LED exterior displayed spinning images of Super Bowl rings, and that of course included all six of the Patriots’ rings, which were earned from 2001-18.

The Patriots weren’t the only team featured, of course…

… but with six rings over the past couple
